Black Hematite

Hematite is found in many rock formations where iron minerals are strongly present, most commonly in sedimentary rock which were the remains of ancient bodies of water. It has a hardness of 5.5 to 6.5 on the moss scale. The name derives from the Greek word, haima, or blood. Even today, many people believe that this stone enhances the circulatory system and one’s over all physical vitality.

Though hematite is not considered rare, it is uncommon to find faceted stones that can be easily set in jewelry. The pieces we use were cut in the seventies. The stone has a dark sparkling appearance, which makes it a great alternative to onyx.
