About The Gold In Our Wedding Rings

Twenty-four carat (24K) gold is too soft to use by itself for jewelry, so gold is mixed with other metals to strengthen it.

For example, 14K yellow gold is 58% gold, and 42% copper and silver. We generally recommend 14K gold rings for anyone who uses their hands for manual labor because it is strong and durable. 18K gold is 75% gold, with the balance mixed with copper and silver.

Alloys also can be used to actually change the color of the gold. We add nickel to the yellow gold to create the white tone. However, if you are sensitive to nickle, we have options of making the ring with palladium at additional cost on a special order basis. Rose gold has a higher copper content, which produces the red tone.

Here is a comparison photo of Katherine Aberle's rings in various golds. From left
to right the metals are: White Gold (antiqued), Rose Gold, Yellow Gold, White Gold.

Most jewelers plate their white gold rings with rhodium to achieve a "whiter" white. 14K white gold, being 58% gold, does have a slightly warmer (golden) tone compared with silver or platinum, but of course, it is not yellow underneath the plating. It is alloyed with other white metals, nickel and silver, to lighten the color. We DO NOT plate our rings, largely due to the extensive finishing process we employ. The satin finish looks beautiful in its natural unplated state. Since we DO NOT plate our rings, you never have to worry about the surface wearing off.

All the precious metal used in the rings made by Katherine Aberle and Reflective Images is recycled.
